The Jim Crow Laws (1896-1890) were founded after the end of the Civil War (1861-1865). The Thirteenth, Fourteenth and Fifteenth amendments were meant to abolish slavery. They also guaranteed equal citizenship for all American Citizens. This also included equal protection under law. The name Jim Crow originated from a Southern Charichature
Instituting Jim Crow was gradual process before 1880. This was most apparent during the Reconstruction. The black people were finally enjoying some federal law protection. But in 1865, Louisiana began to implement "Black Codes". These laws form the basis of racial discrimination. They also reinstated the antebellum special Southern order. This means that white people are at a higher social rung than black people. As Louisiana set up these laws, the hope for racial balance evaporated.The Jim Crow Laws began to infect the whole of USA.
